Jalen Lynn
Hello there everybody my name Jalen M. Lynn and this is my first ever freshman school art blog. In this blog I shall review and look back on my created projects through this semester here at VMCCA. The reason I am doing this blog is because it is considered a grade for this course and it may seem fun, I don't know for now but let's see shall we.

Doodle 4 google design challenge

My insperation for this challenge

Picture
Hello there, this is my explanation of my Doodle 4 Google design and what is it meaning. The idea of the design revolves around the thought of new and improved technological advancements in our near future, and what it could provide for us. For the design of the letters I was inspired by as said before the use of today’s technology and the problems that it can solve. As you can see in the design that the upper case G is Changed into a windmill to represent the power source used for this idea. The iconic double o's are instead printed from today’s 3D printers each representing an image/symbol of peace and intelligence. Next the lower case g shows the image of one of those cartoony communication devices you would see in the jetsons or futurama. Now the l was changed into a test-tube to say that in the future we would’ve now created the ultimate cure for humanity. And finally the e is then hidden inside of the iPad with an eye to represent the future of artificial intelligence and how easy they can be obtained in today’s world.  The message for this image is that over time this world will get better as age goes by like most things, but this mean we can accomplish in this world. The process for this follows the multiple new inventions of today's world and their purpose and accomplishments as well.

Communicating through a mind-map

Picture
Here is my mind map for the Doodle4Google and the ideas that came from brainstorming/researching different items.
For this assignment we were to create a mind-map which basically shows the multiple idea we had while brainstorming. In my mind-map my idea for the Doodle4Google was based around the idea of technology and what it may be like in the near future. In the mind-map you can a few sketches or designs of what I see could be in the future and or what can be seen now in today's world as cutting edge or best of this generation in my opinion.

Answering each of the 4 questions

While creating the mind-map we were given four questions to answer such as Question 1 asking:What do you think it will be like in our future? My reply towards this follows how seen in the designs and images in the map, that the future will get better on throughout time with new inventions, ideas, and fuels sources for this world. Question 2 asks how we will communicate with others such as family and friends? My answer for this follows the image of the Bluetooth eyepiece and also via devices such as the IPad we may see in the future. Question 3 asks:How will we commute to work and school? The answer for this follows how we use new hybrids of vehicles such as hovering cars or boards with one wheel to glide over anything. For the last question it asks will there be peace and equality in the near future. To answer this I would say no, and I,m not saying this as a bad thing but as a good thing because with new conflict means a new future and new life styles for all.

What inspired me for this unit

Again as my theme for this unit revolved around technology, the thing that inspired me was how over multiple decades we keep moving forward into not the future but what we can dream of. The reason this inspired me for the designs in the mind-map was because of the multiple solutions and ideas that can come from a single screw, thought, action, and etc. Literally just an AI computer made by a 10 year old can cause a conversation focusing on the human life and soul. A 3-d printer can not only create attachables limbs for the disabled, but also whatever we want it to create. Just a simple windmill can power over 20 houses and a hoverboard. With technology it doesn't matter what size or shape it is, it can change the world in major ways no one ever thought of before.

My challenge for this unit

Picture
For this unit assignment my challenge and goal was to create 4 out 5 X-Mas ornaments for my family out of clay. The challenge and problem with this was that I must use a certain amount of clay and certain common tools such as just a roller and sculpting blade to add some details and shape the ornaments. In the end I finished this challenge and I know just created 4 X-Mas gifts for my family so this was a Win-Win.

I Developed skills from this assignment

For this assignment I could only use clay which from this helped me improved my skills with this medium once again. From this I gained better skills with sculpting and designing tools to shape and create the designs for the ornaments. From this i used a couple of tools which was the greatest part about this assignment. From this I can now use precise hand movements when sculpting with a thin blade and also a new techniques when pounding the shape and thickness of it as well.

Problems i DEALT with this assignment

During this assignment I was with one ornament and it complex design as well. Remember the last ornament I had to create, there was a little problem that occurred when sculpting it. the problem that occurred was that for the original design of it the ornament was it to be shaped into a diamond and in the diamond would be multiple small diamonds holes in it. As I came to create the ornament I realized  that this would be to much since when sculpting the holes they would be too big for such a small ornament. So to counter this situation I changed the original design into instead a diamond to a star diamond.
Picture
From a failed diamond to now a star of the north

Exploring this medium a little bit further

Again after working on these ornaments I gained better knowledge and practice with this medium more than ever. Again i gained better knowledge of how to shape clay with water and carving out specific but easy designs. Later on this blog shall be updated with the ornaments fired up and glazed.

Skills Developed from it

During this unit we were given the challenge of creating/shaping different artwork from a styrofoam cup thus creating an original art and create our own stand for it as a background piece. From this we were given exacto knives to help sculpt the cup, which in turn help not only develop skills in styrogami but also with sculpting with knives as well. We were also given glue guns and paper mache aswell to shape/create it. Now from this I know how to use/layer paper mache and create the paste as well which can be seen on the cardboard for it.

Challenges i engaged and PERSIST through

While creating this there was a few problems that came across was using the exacto knives/blades when sculpting. The problem that occurred was when cutting with the blades they either created stiff marks or cuts taking up space or they made a piece or item to small and or thin. Another problem was with how cut out curved edges in the cup and getting the exact size wanted/needed for creation. Even though these were some common problems that I met I still moved on and tried my best to redesign/change it to fit the given new situation. Another challenge was the overall view of it since using 1 cup and shaping/cutting out add ons means that whatever side may look hollowed or emptied but still I enjoyed working through this unit even if it is not finished.

Artist solve problems review: Piano staircase and VOLKSWAGEN FINALISTS ideas

Fun theory : WHAT is that? Example of it piano staircase

On the Volkswagen website their is a video called "Piano Staircase" and in it the video they turn a regular random staircase into one of those piano's that you step on to play such as the one in random stores or online. The purpose of it was to have people walk up and down the stair more instead of taking the elevator or escalator more. And guess what it worked so well more than 66% of people now take the stairs in that area and who wouldn't. In the video you see that they are confused when walking up and down it to only be greeted by a random tune, then over time people start to film one another creating a their own tunes and even challenging one another as well. The concept of it is that it revolves around "Fun theory" which to me means to change something common/annoying/or boring into something different and or exciting for other's joy as well.
Piano staircsase

other ideas or design for it

During this unit we as Artists are supposed to think of ways of Solving Everyday, Random, or Personal Problems such as having people spend more time walking up and down stairs and not taking lazy easy shortcuts. Ideas I have personally to add on to help change boring/annoying mundane tasks into something fun or exciting. One such idea could be for changing the way we wash our hands. Changing the handles and faucet on multiple sinks to represent records and speakers to add the excitement of DJing in our bathroom(Give up to DJ Faucet!!!! Air Horns in the background.) Another idea is changing the design of those portable cooler into a portable game of tic tac toe, using the bottle caps of any refreshment as your X's or O's when playing against another to make a trip even more fun

Embracing the shake review

EXPLORE: Embrace the shake

In the ted talk video "Embrace the Shake" the artist Phil Hansen he shares his struggles with nerve damage at a young age and how it affected his passion and skill as a artist. While in the video he shares how he (as stated in the title of the video) embraced the shake meaning he used his own limitations to create and express a new different art style ranging from a nervous shaking hand creating a self portrait to  using hamburger grease to paint the mona lisa. In my opinion this video help inspire artists to actually think INSIDE the box and embracing their own limitations to create something weird and different. After watching this video this help me figure out how for this unit for how to focus on my next project and figure out how to create/design it. In the end of this review I would say this video is great for inspiring others and help realize how to embrace limitations and move on and create from it.

What I am doing

During the Wednesday I was given the task of creating/designing artwork on a pumpkin for a contest this class usually do each year with the students. Not gonna lie, I had some fun making my pumpkin into  dead meme/joke that only a few can remember. The materials we were given was acrylic paint to give the pumpkin multiple layers of design and practice layering during the process.

My design/idea for the pumpkin joke

Picture
Picture
As you can see to the left of the screen is the image/joke/meme known as "One Punch Man Okay" used as inspiration for my pumpkin joke design. And to the right is the joke created for my design revolving around the presidential poles and figures whom shall not be named to not enraged/triggered anyone from this post but to explain, in this joke/situation the republican nominee is up in the race by 57% while on the other hand the democratic nominee is leading  with  only 43%. From these results our main drawn figure(the bald man) replies with saying "Why" to these results and trying to understand how such an event like this is possible.

Outcome and what i have taken from this porject

To the right you can see the final outcome of this project resulting in a kinda funny joke for your viewing pleasure. From this assignment I develop/practice my skills with layering acrylic paint on objects and also creating images on it as well. The only problems I would say I had with this was figuring out what joke my pumpkin to be and also the color scheme for it as well, anyways this is my final piece hope you are either okay with this or against either way this was a joke to me personally.

Artist steals

Developing new skills in this subject

With in this short week we were told about this new unit and from we were supposed to create a work of art that in a way copies/steal elements from another's artwork to which would become a parody of that original work. From this unit we heard of multiple authors/creators/artists/etc that either shared their thoughts/ideas on this matter and how it can be done without it being "Copyrighted" or claimed to be copying another's idea even though in art you MUST be inspired by other's designs and thoughts to create your own in the process.

What I stole from others creations

For this project I decided to copy the style  and concept of famous manga that I like personally is known as "JoJo bizarre Adventure" which is famous and well known to this day actually. So from it I was amazed and drawn by it art style so I decided to use it for my piece. Now after figuring out the style to be used for this project I had to come up with an idea of base concept for, and guess what? Since it is almost close to the presidential election why not use and presidential figure such as the current president Barack Obama for this project.

Deserted Landscape

Developing   skills with chalk pastels

Through this project with us the artists developing new skills or techniques for new mediums. For my creation I created a portfolio of three different pieces of land and seascapes.  In each piece I used chalk/soft pastels to design/create a different and specific land/seascape of my choosing. In this piece I chose to design a desert landscape and mixed dark and light colors to create the sand in the picture

Engaging and PERSISTING through art

From this created seascape piece I dealt with a few challenges such as creating the sun's reflection on the ocean wave, while also trying to blend in the clores to form the clouds covering up the sun.
If I were to be honest on this piece it could've been done better, but still in some spots/places it look well created/designed

Exploring a little bit more with this medium

For my finial piece with this medium I thought I combine both and landscape and seascape to create something better than my two others pieces. In this piece I practice more with the medium and develop a few techniques to create this. Now personally in my word I really enjoyed creating this one the most because of the different details or designs added towards it.

Artist communciate

Through the week I was given a project which was to create our very own personal time capsule and here below show the process/experience of this project

Beginning of this project and process

Picture
In the beginning stages of this project I was to create a design or sketch for the capsule we would soon make later. In my sketch or draft is steps or certain designs need for the capsule and it design.

    Developing aRt making skills

While creating/sculpting my clay capsule I developed a new skill in art making which shall benefit me later on. Such new skills are coiling clay for stack-able layers, using plastic tools to help carve or scratch and slips clay pieces together. From it I learned from that practice is a key factor for what was part of my project such as using coils for my layers. From that it ha helped me review these skills to then help benefit myself later if need to complete a project similar to this.

engage and persist through my project

    Picture
While sculpting my ceramic capsule I was faced with a couple of setbacks/roadblocks. Such setbacks were the size and shape of it which took more time to create, and how it should be layered. Now because of that it also created another setback which was scraping the original lid/top which coast me extra time in re-sculpting it again and making sure it would fit on. From this I was then able to plan out the steps again to hep finish the design which is now this capsule at the lop left.

    Reflecting on this project/creation

    Picture
    Picture
While finishing the final touches of my ceramic capsule I looked back to analyze certain parts, or add on's that were created would have affected the final outcome. Example of this is when the original lid was too big and the stopper(part of it that prevent the lid or capsule from sliding off) was too thin and breakable. From that I was able to reflect and think of other ways to have design it, and the parts/features of it. Now looking back I could've definitely designed it better but the final outcome of it was better than I expected.
